Do you have a holiday tradition that puts you into the holiday spirit? What are the traditions that flood your mind with memories of holidays past?
For most of my adult life, I was the person that decorated EVERYTHING. I would put up at least seven Christmas trees each with its own theme. The nature tree, the seaside tree, the tree that had ornaments I’ve collected over the years; you get the picture. Even the powder bath had a tree! Decorating took time and it was usually done while listening to some of my favorite holiday tunes, especially the music from the Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra, or Tony Bennett. I love Christmas music that makes me feel like I’m in a Blues lounge.
My Tradition to Get in the Holiday Spirit
There’s one single thing I do every year before AND after I put up my holiday decor. Honestly, there were a couple of years where I was in a place in my life where I didn’t put up a single tree but I always did this. I go to my Christmas storage boxes and find a gift that my parents gave me years ago (probably twenty)! The gift was a simple coffee table book called Christmas in America (you can find the book on Amazon but it’s in very limited quantities). This book is filled with random Christmas photos from around the country. It’s such a simple thing but each year I page through the beautiful photos of people celebrating the holidays around the United States and it immediately puts me in the holiday spirit. It also reminds me of my parents.♥
Making Your Own Holiday Tradition
Traditions don’t necessarily need to be huge dramatic events. Maybe you feel the spirit of the holiday when you unwrap and hang your favorite ornament (I love Old World Christmas Ornaments). Maybe it’s baking and using a cookie recipe handed down from generations before you or maybe it’s hanging stockings or my new little favorite a snow globe lantern on the mantle. However, you celebrate the season, traditions are important and can give us a sense of belonging. They help us remember parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, and good friends. There’s no better time than now to start a tradition if you don’t have one. I guarantee you it will be something that you will learn to love and your family will too.
However you celebrate this season, I wish you peace and happiness the whole year through.
